Are You Ready for the City 2 Surf?

Not long now! The City2Surf is just around the corner. Are you race ready for your 14-kilometre run?
Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. From sorting your playlist to ensuring you have the right gear, here are a few key things to consider leading up to the big day.

Playlist Ready: Tunes to move to

Whether you’re a fan of current pop, a lover of rock or classic ’70s, 80’s or 90’s tunes, music is a universal mover. So, create your personalised killer playlist to inspire you on your City2Surf journey. Choose upbeat songs with lyrics that resonate with your determination to conquer the course. From high-energy tracks to your personal faves, curate a playlist to keep your spirits high and your feet moving. And when the going gets tough, your playlist will push you to the finish line!

Nutrition: Eat for performance

You get out of your body what you put in. So, proper nutrition is crucial in your preparation for the City2Surf. As race day approaches, increase your carbohydrate intake. Carbs are your body's primary fuel source during endurance activities. Up your carb intake a few days before the race, focusing on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. This "carb loading" will help top up your glycogen stores, giving you the energy reserves you need to power through the challenging course.

On the day of the race, start with a breakfast that combines carbohydrates and protein. But make sure you’ve tested this breakfast before a run, prior to race day. Opt for a balanced meal such as oatmeal with fruits and a side of yogurt or eggs on whole-grain toast.

Also, remember to hydrate well in the days leading up to the race and continue to sip water or a sports drink to stay hydrated on the day.

Run Gear: Look like a winner, run like a winner

Nothing will make you feel like ‘you’ve got this’ more than looking the part. And don’t forget, thousands of people will be there. But more importantly, when running, having the right gear can make a world of difference to your comfort, performance and, ultimately, your enjoyment.

Choose moisture-wicking fabrics that keep you dry and comfortable throughout the race. Invest in proper running shoes with the right foot support and cushioning. A well-fitted sports bra and moisture-wicking socks are essential for a comfortable and chafe-free run.

You’ve worked hard to get here, so treat yourself to new running attire that looks the part and provides the comfort and functionality you need to perform at your best. Getting new gear can also be motivating. And when you look the part, you'll feel the part; use this confidence to carry you through the course.

Taper/rest beforehand: Recharge your batteries

In the week leading up to the City 2 Surf, it's important to incorporate a tapering period into your training plan. Tapering involves reducing your training volume and intensity to allow your body to recover and replenish its energy stores. This rest period ensures you arrive at the start line feeling fresh and ready to perform best.

Use this time to focus on gentle runs, stretching, and foam rolling to keep your muscles loose and prevent last-minute injuries. Remember, the hard work is already done, so give your body the rest it needs to perform at its peak on race day.

The City 2 Surf is an incredible event that will test your endurance, determination, and spirit. But having prepared yourself mentally and physically, you'll be ready to tackle the challenge head-on. So, set up your playlist, fuel your body with proper nutrition, ensure you have the right run gear, and give yourself the rest and tapering you deserve.

The finish line awaits.
